The world is changing. And it can be very easy to get lost in the ocean of potential impulse buys that lurk at every market, store or mall we walk into. And while there’s nothing wrong with being a consumer, sometimes our purchases own us as much as we own them. We amass clutter. We lose track of the things that are really important. We find ourselves seeking the easy way in everything we do, when sometimes it really is better to take the long way round and avoid the expressway altogether.
But balance…balance is important. You don’t want to buy too much, but you don’t want to live an absolutely Spartan lifestyle, either. You want more decoration than a nail driven into the wall upon which you hang the one hat that you own. You want comfort without clutter.
And there’s [Re]Evolver’s purpose in simplified terms: I just want to live. I want to live comfortably, and I want to leave a decent world behind me for my children to adopt. And I want to be healthy and to live to be a ripe, old, wizened age. Along the way I want to know when NASA’s Titan mission succeeds and I want to know what they find when they get there. I want to know the very moment that the God Particle is discovered. I want to see the day when the first woman walks on Mars. And I want to see the day when racism and poverty are nothing more than ugly chapters in a history book.
The world is changing. The speed of advancement of our technology quadruples every few years, it seems. The rate of discovery and our understanding of the inner workings of the Universe are astounding, but there are still things to learn, places to see, people to meet. Now if we could just do something in the meantime to make sure this planet we live on stays healthy, we’ll have exceeded our programming by a stretch, I think.
The point is that we can have our gadgets and feeds and computers and still live a sustainable life. That’s the future I see, at least, and it’s a topic I hope to return to regularly on [re]evolver.
